A Floral Blouse Unlike the Rest: Meet Archway, Painted in Japanese Watercolours

Archway floral blouse in Sea blue Liberty Fabrics watercolour print

Most floral blouses start life as a stock print, dropped onto fabric by the metre. Archway didn't.

Every wildflower on this blouse — the poppies, gerberas, scabious, delphinium, amaranth, dianthus, gentian and anemones — began as a pencil drawing, then was painted by hand using traditional Japanese Gansai watercolours. The result is a subtly mirrored composition that does something most floral prints don't: it holds nature's actual balance of chaos and symmetry, rather than a repeat-pattern version of it. It's an Archway Liberty Fabrics print, and it's one of the loveliest we've brought into the shop.

We cut it into a slightly oversized blouse with button-fastened cuff sleeves, in 100% Tana Lawn cotton that needs minimal ironing — which matters more than it sounds like it should, on the days you're already stretched thin. True to size sits relaxed; size down if you'd rather it fitted.

It's also one of those rare pieces that doesn't clock off at the end of a season. Wear it with shorts and sandals through the warmer months, layer it under a blazer once the mornings turn cool, or tuck it into your favourite jeans for the kind of easy, put-together look that doesn't ask you to think about it. A floral blouse this considered earns a permanent place in the wardrobe rather than a single-season one.
